Ever scroll past a "this season's hottest nail trend" post in September and think, hang on, that looks distinctly like an autumn colour, and we're heading into spring? You're not imagining it. Most of the beauty world runs on a Northern Hemisphere calendar, so half of what's trending right now was designed for someone heading into a New York or London autumn, not a New Zealand spring. Doesn't mean it's all wrong for us, some of it translates beautifully. But a bit of translation helps, so let's do that together.

Why "Fall Nails" Are Everywhere in Spring

Nail trend content gets written months ahead for the Northern Hemisphere's calendar, and September is peak "cosy autumn" season over there, all chocolate browns, smoky greys and deep olive tones. Meanwhile we're putting the woolly jumpers away and watching the garden wake up. The trends themselves are genuinely gorgeous, they're just built for someone else's weather. The trick is knowing which ones cross the equator well, and which ones are worth saving for our own autumn in a few months.

What the Celebrities Are Actually Wearing Right Now

A quick look at what's been showing up on famous hands lately gives a good snapshot of where nail art is heading in general, even before we adjust it for our seasons.

Addison Rae has been wearing a half moon manicure, long square nails with a white base and a barely-there crescent of colour at the base, a softer, more grown-up take on the classic French. Kylie Jenner's gone for an oval French customised with tiny rhinestones scattered across the tips. Dua Lipa was spotted with a giraffe print manicure, playful shades of brown standing in for the usual leopard spots. Hailey Bieber wore a coloured-tip French with tips inspired by album artwork colours. Sabrina Carpenter kept it classic with a long oval nail in a rich, vintage-leaning red. And Lisa wore black almond nails with chrome tips and sparkle running the full length for a performance look.

The common thread? A lot of texture and finish play (chrome, rhinestones, sheer washes) sitting on top of fairly classic shapes. That part travels anywhere, any season, any hemisphere.

The Colours That Actually Work for a NZ Spring

This is where it gets useful. Some of this month's trending colours were basically made for a Kiwi spring, and some were made for someone else's winter coat.

Jewel tones (think emerald, sapphire, amethyst) are having a real moment, and they work brilliantly right now. They're bold without being heavy, and they sit nicely against everything waking up in the garden.

Deep cherry, a shade that sits between true red and burgundy and can look almost black in low light before revealing its red undertone, is another one that carries well into spring, especially with a glossy finish rather than anything matte.

Sunny yellow and juicy peach are both trending right now too, and they're a genuinely lovely fit for spring specifically, warm without being heavy, and they photograph beautifully in actual daylight instead of under string lights.

On the other hand, chocolate brown, smoky grey, sultry olive and anything described as "cosy" is very much designed for a Northern autumn. Nothing wrong with any of them, they're gorgeous shades, they're just going to feel a bit out of step with a Kiwi spring. Worth bookmarking for our own autumn around March to May, when they'll actually match the mood outside your window instead of fighting it.
