Option one: book a salon gel appointment, sit in a chair for forty-five minutes, and hope you can get an appointment that actually fits your week. Option two: grab a sheet of gel wraps from the drawer and do it yourself in the time it takes to watch one episode of something. We get asked about the difference between these two all the time, so let's actually break it down.

What is a salon gel manicure?

A salon gel manicure is done with liquid gel polish, a base coat, one or two colour coats, and a top coat, each one cured under a UV or LED lamp before the next goes on. It's applied by a technician, which means a genuinely skilled hand shaping your cuticles, prepping your nail bed, and building up that glassy, hard-wearing finish coat by coat.

The trade-off is time and access. You need an appointment, you need to sit still for it, and if you're rural, regional, or juggling a job and kids (hello, most of us), finding a salon slot that works for your week isn't always simple. And, you need to go back to remove them.

What are gel wraps?

Gel wraps, sometimes called semi-cured gel nail wraps, are pre-made strips that already carry the colour, pattern, or shimmer baked in. You apply them straight to clean, dry nails, press to bond, then file to shape. No UV lamp, no wet polish, no waiting around for anything to dry. Removal and nail health: the part nobody talks about enough

Here's the honest bit. Salon gel is hard-cured and genuinely tough to remove - it needs a proper soak-off or careful filing back by a technician. Done well, that's fine. Done in a rush (or peeled off at home because you couldn't wait), it can take layers of your natural nail with it. How long does each one actually last?

A salon gel manicure can hold up for a couple of weeks with the right aftercare, largely because of that professional prep and multi-coat cure. Gel wraps are designed for the same kind of wear - we recommend up to 14 days, and always with a good nailspa or oil removal at the end of that window. It's not because the wrap gives up at day 14; it's because your natural nails deserve a break between sets, and that's a health call, not a limitation.

So which one's actually right for you?

If you love the ritual of a salon visit, want intricate hand-painted nail art, or you're prepping for one big event and want a technician's touch, a salon gel manicure is genuinely great at what it does. If you want salon-looking nails on your own schedule - no appointment, no chair time, no waiting for anything to dry - gel wraps do the job for a lot less fuss and a lot more flexibility.
